Music Cultures

The students at North Jackson Elementary are expected to understand various song styles and multi-cultural music. The more students understand the various song styles and multi-cultural music, the greater their ability to perform, create, and interpret or critique the music of other musicians, cultures, and historical periods.

Song Styles:


Students in kindergarten through fifth grade will focus on:
Spirituals
Game songs
Work songs
Lullabies
Marches
Patriotic
Bluegrass
Appalachian


Sixth grade students will focus on:
Gospel
Broadway musicals
Blues
Jazz
Popular
Ballads

Multi-Cultural Music:

Students in kindergarten through fifth grade will focus on:
Native American music
Traditional Appalachian music (folk music)
West African music
Music from the Colonial American period
Students will also be introduced to some of the great composers:
Haydn, Bach, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Mozart and many others.

Students in sixth grade will begin to focus on:
Latin American music
Asian Music
Students will continue to explore the great composers.
Bizet, Ives, Bernstein, Copland, Cage and many others.
