My name is James Spence.  I am currently starting my fifth year teaching Construction Carpentry at Barren County ATC.  I graduated high school from Allen County-Scottsville and attended Western Kentucky University were I received my bachelors degree in Industrial Technology and associates degree in Industrial Education.   I am also the co-sponsor for our SkillsUSA club. I am married to Stephanie and we have one child named Jacob.

The Residential Carpenter Assistant pathway prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to lay out, cut, fabricate, erect, install, and repair wooden structures and fixtures, using hand and power tools.  Includes instruction in technical mathmatics, framing, construction material and selection, job estimating, blueprint reading, foundations and roughing in, finish carpentry techniques, and applicable codes and standards.

In order for a student to complete this pathway they must complete

  • Introduction to Construction Technology
  • Floor and Wall Framing

And Choose 2 Credits from the following

  • Ceiling and Roof Framing
  • Exterior and Interior Finish


  • Site Layout and Foundations
  • Co-op (Carpentry) OR 460245 Internship (Carpentry)
