Barren County 6th Graders from Austin-Tracy, Eastern, Hiseville, North Jackson, Red Cross, and Temple Hill compete at KAAC Showcase in Tompkinsville on Saturday, Dec 6th. 


FCS Day: Barren County Celebrates!

Barren County Family and Consumer Science and the Kentucky Department of Education celebrated the first ever FCS Day on December 3, 2014.  Now they need your help to keep the celebration going.  Please "Dine In" with your family or friend and then take "Healthy Selfies" to post to social media to help educate and inform the public about the benefits of healthy eating and FCS education programs using the hashtags, #FCSday and #BCHealthySelfie.

Children's Day Celebration

The 3rd Annual Childrens Day celebration will be held on November 20th beginning at 6 pm at the historic Plaza Theatre in downtown Glasgow. Children from Glasgow Schools, Barren County Schools, and Caverna Elementary Schools will provide a muscial perfomance for everyones enjoyment. Proceeds from Childrens Day activities and events provide basic and special needs items and funding for the Backpack Food Program for area children in need.

C J Jennings, a junior at Barren County High School, has been chosen as the overall Children’s Day poster contest winner. C J’s design will be used on this year’s Children’s Day t-shirt. Congratulations to the four first place winners of the Children’s Day Poster Contest for this year and they are: 1st Place Elementary Schools Category-Brooklyn Renee Lyons-Temple Hill Elementary and Lily Collins Frost-South Green Elementary; 1st Place Middle School Category-Chasey Jessie; and 1st Place High School Category-Mikila (CJ) Jennings-Barren County High School.

Barren County Schools Endorses Kentucky Safe Schools Week


The Kentucky Center for School Safety announces Kentucky Safe Schools Week tol be observed October 19-25, 2014.

This year’s theme “LEAN On Me; Stop the Bullying!” focuses on the culture of the school and the interdependence of students and staff to make their school safe, warm and welcoming.  Within this overall culture students will be encouraged to support each other, connect with the staff and be diligent as they watch out for others in need. Fundamental to the “LEAN On Me” concept is straight from the song lyrics, “sometimes in our lives we all have pain and we all have sorrow” learning to depend on fellow classmates, trust the adults at school and to treat others well.  This “culture of kindness” will support the subtitle of “STOP the Bullying” by getting to the root of the problem before episodes escalate. National School Lunch Week

National School Lunch Week is October 13-17th, 2014. This  year’s theme is “Get in the Game with School Lunch,” and we are going to knock this week’s lunch out of the park.  The Nutrition Services staff want to celebrate with you by offering special treats this week when you eat lunch from the cafeteria.  We all know that staying active is just as important as eating healthy, so make a goal to follow the 95210 District Wellness Plan.  In addition to the monthly drawing related to 95210, students who eat lunch provided by the cafeteria this week will be placed in a drawing for prizes.  Please read the back of the menu for tips to help you and your family maintain a healthy lifestyle.

2014 Kentucky K-PREP Scores Show Barren County Schools Proficient

The third year of the Kentucky Performance Rating for Educational Progress (K-PREP) tests have been released, and the Barren County Schools show continual growth.   The Barren County District overall score increased to 68.9, which placed the district in the proficient range and at the 78th percentile in the accountability system.

In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Barren County fans are encouraged to show your support by wearing your pink shirt at the Barren Co. vs. Logan Co. football game on Friday, Oct. 17th. Kickoff is at 7pm.

Rising Temperatures Prompt Barren County Staff to Pass out Water to Students Riding Buses

Recent increases in the temperature have caused school officials to see the need to pass out water to students as they board their bus home.  Cortni Crews, DPP for Barren County Schools stated that “temperatures outside and on the bus created a need for students to be well hydrated.  We don’t want students to be uncomfortable or even worse become ill from the heat.”  Pictured: Custodians passing out water at Hiseville Elementary.

Event Changes- Due to Extreme Heat

All sporting events or other weather related changes for the next few days that are reported to us will be posted here.

  • Barren Co/Glasgow Bowl 8/23 first game start time has been changed to 6:00 pm.
  • Girls Soccer on Saturday, 8/23 @ Warren East has been slightly changed.  BCHS will play at 9 am but will be finished by 10:30 am. 
  • BCHS Boys Golf Tournament 8/23 is Cancelled and rescheduled for Saturday Aug 30 at 10:30 am. Barren River State Park

Barren Co. / Glasgow Football Bowl - Weather Delay Update

After severe weather delayed the first of the Saturday night bowl games, the decision was made to postpone the 2nd half of the Glasgow vs Hart Co. game until 4:00 pm Sunday, August 24th.  The Barren County and Metcalfe Co. game will be played approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. 

Come out and join us in support of your favorite team!  The Barren Co / Glasgow  Football Bowl will now be conducted Sunday beginning at 4:00pm at the BCHS Trojan Stadium.  Officials have announced that no admission will be charged for these postponed games.

Preschool to begin August 21st with Dual Busing Restored

                With preschool set to begin this Thursday, August 21st, we are proud to announce that preschooler s will once again be on their own bus to and from school.   With this being the case, starting and ending times have changed slightly.  Preschool hours will be 8:00-1:15, Monday through Thursday, with transportation being provided.     Please note that you can choose to transport your child and drop him/her off at an earlier time, if needed.  Your child may also stay and participate in 21st Century programming at each school after the 1:15 departure time, if you choose to pick him/her up at a later time.  
On Fridays,  21st Century Programming will be offered to all preschoolers at a small fee ($10) if you choose to participate and transport your child to and from school.    As always, we are excited about the year to come and look forward to seeing your little ones this Thursday!  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact staff at your school or Cynthia York, Director of Special Programs at 270-651-3787.

Barren County Nutrition Services Staff is ready to serve you!  Please take a look at our breakfast and lunch for the first days of school.  All lunch menus will be posted online under the "Lunch Menu" link of this website as the menus change.  If you have questions regarding Free and Reduced Lunch applications, please call 270-651-3787 and ask for Kendra or Jackie.  


OPENING DAY FOR STAFF IS AUGUST 5

Barren County Schools employees will gather once again at the Plaza Theater for Opening Day festivities on Tuesday, August 5, 2014, at 8:00 a.m.  Please wear either burgundy or gold. Celebrate new beginnings and welcome each other back to begin a new school year!   WE ARE BC!


Matthews selected as KSBA’s 2014 Kids First Advocacy Awards Recipient

 Barren County Superintendent Bo Matthews was presented a Kids First Advocacy Award during the Summer Leadership Institute General Session on July 11th at the Marriott Griffin Gate in Lexington, Kentucky.  The award was presented to Superintendent Matthews for outstanding work on behalf of Kentucky’s children in the public arena.

Barren County Schools Complete Data Retreat

Nearly 100 Barren County educators worked collaboratively with GRREC trainers to analyze school data as part of summer professional learning the week of July 7-9, 2014.  The Data Retreat was comprised of teams 8-10 staff members from eleven Barren County schools.  The teams were joined by Superintendent Matthews and district support staff from both the Instructional Services and Special Programs departments.  Click on read more link for pictures of the school teams in action at the Data Retreat.

Beta Update - Latest news from Richmond, Virginia

Hiseville Elementary Jr. Beta Club places 3rd in Banner competition and 3rd in Spotlight on on Club at National Beta Convention.  Way to go Cardinals!

Austin-Tracy Jr. Beta Club placed in the Top 5 at the National Convention in Richmond, VA.  The club performs Monday for one final round of judging.  Good luck Eagles!

Barren Students Excel at State STLP Conference

 

The State STLP (Student Technology Leadership Program) Conference was held in Lexington, Ky on April 22, 2014.  Nearly 100 Barren County Students competed in over 25 different technology related competitions during the day. Many of these students began their quest for the state conference by qualifying at the regional showcase in the fall, and/or during winter judging. Nearly 5000 people descended upon Rupp Arena Tuesday with the hopes of being a "State Champion".  Congratulations to all of the Barren County Students that participated and placed at the conference.

2014 Districtwide 21st Century Summer Camps

Summer Camp Bussing Information:  

7:00 AM - Bus arrives at elementary schools for student pick up

7:15 AM - Bus departs from elementary schools to 21st Century Summer Camp locations at North Jackson Elementary and Trojan Campus.

12 noon - Busses leave North Jackson Elementary returning to elementary drop off  points.  All students should be picked up between 12:15 and 12:30

Barren County 21st Century Community Learning Centers will host a districtwide summer camp, with options for students of all ages.  Elementary camps are open to all Barren County Elementary students and the camp location will be at North Jackson Elementary.  Barren County Middle and High School 21st Century Camps have various locations.  Some transportation will be provided, and limited scholarships are available. For more information, please contact your school's 21st Century Coordinator.

It's Time to Try School Breakfast

Glasgow, KY, March 9, 2014 – The majority of Americans feel breakfast is important, but hectic mornings make it difficult to fit the meal in every day. In fact, 40 percent of moms say that their child does not eat breakfast daily, according to Kellogg's Breakfast in America survey. To garner increased participation in the School Breakfast Program, Barren County schools will recognize National School Breakfast Week. Slated for March 3-7 2014, Barren County will be celebrating a week later due to inclement weather last week.  National School Breakfast Week is a weeklong celebration aimed at increasing awareness of the School Breakfast Program among students and parents.

Congratulations Morgan Thomas, All State Orchestra #1 Principle Cellist

BCHS junior Morgan Thomas was named the number one principle cellist with the Kentucky All State Orchestra in a special ceremony recently held in Louisville.  Students are selected via a rigorous audition process that starts at the district level. Students who perform at the district level are then eligible to audition for selection to the state ensembles. Thus, the All-State student musicians are truly "the best of the best." .


Barren County Schools and Western Kentucky University to Sign Arts Capstone Agreement

On February 18, 2014, Barren County Schools Superintendent Bo Matthews and President Dr. Gary Ransdell will host a Capstone Signing ceremony to initiate a Fine Arts Capstone Agreement between Barren County High School and Western Kentucky University.  This agreement establishes a partnership and commitment between each educational institution to provide three fine arts pathways of study, including musical, visual, and performing arts.  Students within the Capstone Program can earn a minimum of nine college credit hours through dual credit and advance placement coursework.  At the signing, Barren County High School students will showcase talents in each of the program areas.

Barren County Middle School Student Selected Kentucky Jr. Beta President

Hadleigh Hammer, an eighth grade student at Barren County Middle School and the daughter of Bart & Heather Hammer was just elected as the new Kentucky Jr. Beta President at the annual convention being held in Louisville KY.  Her speech was given yesterday with voting and the announcement of all winning officers made during the annual Jr. Beta Dance.  Hadleigh will advance to the national competition which will be held in June in Richmond, Virginia.

Barren County High School Cheerleaders finished 2nd in the Universal Cheerleaders Association National Championship in Orlando, Florida.  Barren County competed in the Medium Varsity Coed Division finishing behind McCracken County High School by 1.55 points.  You can watch their routine at http://www.varsity.com/event/1812/2014_uca_nhscc. Congratulations BCHS Swim Team

Coach Angela Ludwig and the Barren County High School Swim Team competed this weekend in their final meet of the season, the 2014 KHSAA Region One Championships in Owensboro. This championship consisted of two days of fierce competition in which the BCHS swimmers demonstrated their competitiveness by beating personal best times as well as breaking standing school records.

21st Century Community Learning Center Lights On Celebration

 On February 13, 2014, 21st Century Community Learning Centers celebrated a historical event that will take out of school time to a new level of excellence for Barren County Schools.  Barren County 21st Century Community Learning Centers announced the obtainment of additional 21st Century Grant funding for Barren County Schools, securing grant-funded programs in all of the Barren County Schools.

21st Century Learning Grants Awarded to Hiseville & BCMS

Barren County Schools Superintendent Bo Matthews announced last night at a joint board meeting to Board of Education Members and Site-based Council Members that two schools in the district are recipients of 21st Century Community Learning Center grants.  Hiseville Elementary will receive $637,500.00 over the next five years, and Barren County Middle School had their grant extended for five years at $352,500.00.

Region 2 STLP Showcase

Over 150 Barren County students grades 1-12 traveled to WKU on December 9th to compete in the Region 2 Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) conference.  Students showcase projects that impact their schools and communities or provide technical or instructional projects in hopes of qualifying for the STLP State Conference held in March of 2015.  Along with showcase competitions the region showcase also offers Engineer interviews and Digital and Social Media events.  STLP will also include winter project competitions which are live judging events for art, music & video. The winter events are submitted online from December to early January.
