2015 Football Information

BCMS is excited to start the 2015 middle school football season. Mr. Nick Compton has been named the head football coach for both the 7th and 8th grade football teams.  There will be a parent meeting on June 29that 5:30 in the BCMS Media Center.  All participants must have a current sports physical in order to play.  We look forward to a great season full of pride, teamwork and tradition.

JOHNSON NAMED NEW BCHS PRINCIPAL

The Barren County High School Site-Based Decision Making Council has named Mr. Brad Johnson as their new principal.  Johnson succeeds Steve Riley who will be retiring June 30th, 2015.

School Lunch Hero Day

  Help celebrate National School Lunch Hero Day on May 1, 2015 as a way to honor the Nutrition Services Staff across the nation and at Barren County Schools.  The professionals in the Nutrition Services departments of Barren County Schools work diligently each day to provide nutritious, appealing meals for all students in addition to providing food for students in the summer.  Whether it's putting their heart into making food or showing care and concern for students, the Nutrition Services staff help create a memorable culture in a school.  So, please take time to thank your cafeteria staff on Friday!

Barren Schools Compete at State STLP Championships

This year approximately 110 students from across various Barren County Schools qualified to compete in the STLP State Championships, which were held on Thursday, March 19, 2015 in Lexington, KY. The State Championship allows students from across the state to come together and demonstrate for other students, school and community persons what they know and can do with technology.   Click Read More for full story!

Barren County Holds Active Shooter Drill for Staff

(Glasgow, KY 3-13-15).  Barren County Schools, in collaboration with The Barren County Sheriff's Department, will participate in an active shooter training exercise on Monday, March 16th.  The day of scheduled drills will involve staff only, and no students will be present.  This simulation demonstrates the school district's commitment to being proactive and responsive in the event of a real emergency.

Barren County High School will be hosting a parent night for all current 8th grade parents on Thursday, March 12th at 5:30pm.   The meeting will be held at the high school auditorium.   Mrs. Jones, the 9th grade counselor, will highlight important scheduling and registration information for students to select classes for the 9th grade year.  We encourage all 8th grade parents to attend to hear about the many opportunities for your child at Barren County High School.

National School Breakfast Week

Barren County Nutrition Services will be serving "Brunch for Lunch" on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 in celebration of National School Breakfast Week in connection with Read Across America Week.

The "Brunch for Lunch" theme centers around "Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr. Suess.  The items for lunch are as follows: Hot Ham and Cheese and "Green Eggs" served with herb-roasted potato bites, freshly sliced tomatoes, and juicy fresh oranges.

Eat breakfast with your school cafeteria this week, and you might be a lucky winner of prizes donated by local businesses.  

Soccer Parent/Player Meeting

Parents and players are encouraged to attend an informational soccer meeting on Monday, March 9 at 5pm in the BCMS cafeteria.

FCS Day: Barren County Celebrates!

Barren County Family and Consumer Science and the Kentucky Department of Education celebrated the first ever FCS Day on December 3, 2014.  Now they need your help to keep the celebration going.  Please "Dine In" with your family or friend and then take "Healthy Selfies" to post to social media to help educate and inform the public about the benefits of healthy eating and FCS education programs using the hashtags, #FCSday and #BCHealthySelfie. 

Barren County High School Band Students Successfully Audition for KMEA 3rd District Honors Band

Dr. Kip Crowder, Barren County High School Band Director, announced today the group of students who have successfully auditioned for the 3rd District Kentucky Music Education Association Honors Band. The KMEA 3rd District Honors Band is comprised of students from over 50 middle and high schools in the 13 counties of South Central Kentucky.  Students are expected to play a piece of prepared music as well as sight read for a score in a blind audition (in other words, the judges can only hear the student performance, but cannot see their gender or know which school they come from).  Only the top students from each audition are selected. 

 

Wizard of Oz

The highly anticipated BCMS production of The Wizard of Oz is approaching. The middle school performance will be held Monday, December 8th at 6pm in the Barren County High School auditorium. The performance is reserved seating only.  Tickets can be purchased at the high school through Glenna Gardner or at the door for $5. Doors open at 5:15. We're off to see the Wizard and hope you can join us!

Governor Steve Beshear visits BCHS for Road Improvement Announcement

Governor Steve Beshear made a visit to Barren County High School Thursday, October 30th to announce the start of improvements on the bridge located on highway #249 near Trojan Trail.

Grandparent Day Celebration and Book Fair

BCMS will be celebrating Grandparent's Day on Friday, November 7 at 1:30.  Refreshments will be served.

Everyone is also encourage to visit our Book Fair.

Children's Day Celebration

The 3rd Annual Childrens Day celebration will be held on November 20th beginning at 6 pm at the historic Plaza Theatre in downtown Glasgow. Children from Glasgow Schools, Barren County Schools, and Caverna Elementary Schools will provide a muscial perfomance for everyones enjoyment. Proceeds from Childrens Day activities and events provide basic and special needs items and funding for the Backpack Food Program for area children in need. 

Children’s Day Celebration Poster Contest Winners

C J Jennings, a junior at Barren County High School, has been chosen as the overall Children’s Day poster contest winner. C J’s design will be used on this year’s Children’s Day t-shirt. Congratulations to the four first place winners of the Children’s Day Poster Contest for this year and they are: 1st Place Elementary Schools Category-Brooklyn Renee Lyons-Temple Hill Elementary and Lily Collins Frost-South Green Elementary; 1st Place Middle School Category-Chasey Jessie; and 1st Place High School Category-Mikila (CJ) Jennings-Barren County High School.

Barren County Schools Endorses Kentucky Safe Schools Week


The Kentucky Center for School Safety announces Kentucky Safe Schools Week tol be observed October 19-25, 2014.

This year’s theme “LEAN On Me; Stop the Bullying!” focuses on the culture of the school and the interdependence of students and staff to make their school safe, warm and welcoming.  Within this overall culture students will be encouraged to support each other, connect with the staff and be diligent as they watch out for others in need. Fundamental to the “LEAN On Me” concept is straight from the song lyrics, “sometimes in our lives we all have pain and we all have sorrow” learning to depend on fellow classmates, trust the adults at school and to treat others well.  This “culture of kindness” will support the subtitle of “STOP the Bullying” by getting to the root of the problem before episodes escalate. Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH) Warning of Dangers of Consuming Unpasteurized Milk

The Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH) is warning consumers about the dangers of consuming unpasteurized milk and other products that could lead to E. coli infection, following a recent outbreak in North Central Kentucky and the hospitalization of four children.

National School Lunch Week

National School Lunch Week is October 13-17th, 2014. This  year’s theme is “Get in the Game with School Lunch,” and we are going to knock this week’s lunch out of the park.  The Nutrition Services staff want to celebrate with you by offering special treats this week when you eat lunch from the cafeteria.  We all know that staying active is just as important as eating healthy, so make a goal to follow the 95210 District Wellness Plan.  In addition to the monthly drawing related to 95210, students who eat lunch provided by the cafeteria this week will be placed in a drawing for prizes.  Please read the back of the menu for tips to help you and your family maintain a healthy lifestyle. 

 

2014 Kentucky K-PREP Scores Show Barren County Schools Proficient

The third year of the Kentucky Performance Rating for Educational Progress (K-PREP) tests have been released, and the Barren County Schools show continual growth.   The Barren County District overall score increased to 68.9, which placed the district in the proficient range and at the 78th percentile in the accountability system.  

2014 Football Pinkout

In support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Barren County fans are encouraged to show your support by wearing your pink shirt at the Barren Co. vs. Logan Co. football game on Friday, Oct. 17th. Kickoff is at 7pm.

Rising Temperatures Prompt Barren County Staff to Pass out Water to Students Riding Buses

Recent increases in the temperature have caused school officials to see the need to pass out water to students as they board their bus home.  Cortni Crews, DPP for Barren County Schools stated that “temperatures outside and on the bus created a need for students to be well hydrated.  We don’t want students to be uncomfortable or even worse become ill from the heat.”  Pictured: Custodians passing out water at Hiseville Elementary.

Event Changes- Due to Extreme Heat

All sporting events or other weather related changes for the next few days that are reported to us will be posted here.

  • Barren Co/Glasgow Bowl 8/23 first game start time has been changed to 6:00 pm.
  • Girls Soccer on Saturday, 8/23 @ Warren East has been slightly changed.  BCHS will play at 9 am but will be finished by 10:30 am. 
  • BCHS Boys Golf Tournament 8/23 is Cancelled and rescheduled for Saturday Aug 30 at 10:30 am. Barren River State Park
Barren Co. / Glasgow Football Bowl - Weather Delay Update

After severe weather delayed the first of the Saturday night bowl games, the decision was made to postpone the 2nd half of the Glasgow vs Hart Co. game until 4:00 pm Sunday, August 24th.  The Barren County and Metcalfe Co. game will be played approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. 

Come out and join us in support of your favorite team!  The Barren Co / Glasgow  Football Bowl will now be conducted Sunday beginning at 4:00pm at the BCHS Trojan Stadium.  Officials have announced that no admission will be charged for these postponed games.

BCHS Principal Selection Survey

The Barren County High School SBDM members request your input as part of the principal selection process by participating in a survey. This survey can be completed on-line at by clicking here. A hard copy version will also be available in the front office at Barren County High School. If you prefer to use the online version, but do not have internet access, computers will be available in the school media center from 7:30-3:30 daily during the survey window. The window for the completion of this survey will begin on Thursday, April 23rd, and end on Thursday, April 30th, at midnight. The survey will include criteria for principal selection to be ranked in order of importance. A comment box will also be included. The council hopes the participation in this survey of students, parents, staff, and community members will provide valuable insight in the selection of our next Barren County High School principal.

Middle School Baseball Tryouts

Tryouts for the middle school baseball team will be Saturday, February 28 from 8:00-9:45am at the JROTC building.  Bring tennis shoes and baseball gear.

KMEA's Solo and Ensemble festival

On Saturday March 14th, the Barren County orchestra program was very well represented at KMEA's Solo and Ensemble festival. The festival was held at Moss Middle School in Bowling Green, KY. These students worked hard after school hours to prepare solo literature and small ensembles to perform for a judge and receive a rating of novice, apprentice, proficient, or distinguished. The judge was very complimentary of the kids' efforts and gave very specific and conducive feedback to each student as they performed. Overall, the middle school and high school combined received 3 distinguished plus ratings which are only rewarded for stellar performances. 19 distinguished ratings, 1 proficient plus, and 5 proficient ratings were received at this event. The participants are listed by rating and their grade level is in parenthesis.

Leader of the Future Applications

The 2015-16 Glasgow Barren County Chamber of Commerce Leaders of the Future applications are available to any interested 7th and 8th grader.  The deadline for the applications is Friday, May 8, 2015.
 

Kentucky Derby Festival Regional Spelling Bee Held

The 2015 Kentucky Derby Festival Regional Spelling Bee was held at the Barren County Extension Office on Thursday, Feb. 12th.  Fifteen students who had won their local school level spelling bee competed for the regional title.  After 9 rounds of competition, Ashley Wright, an eighth grade student from Barren County Middle School was determined to be the winner.  This is not the first time Ashley has won this title.  She was also the regional champion last year and competed in the state level competition.  Angelia Pulliam, a sixth grade student from Temple Hill was declared as the 1st Runner Up for the event.  The winning word which Ashley spelled correctly was bureaucracy.  

College & Career Development Coordinator Announced for Barren County Schools

21st Century students grow and prepare food for BC Cafeteria

Barren County 21st Century Summer Scholars worked with the Greenhouse Camp and community partners to plant, weed, harvest, and prepare 5000 servings of corn for the students of Barren County Schools.  All students will have the opportunity to taste this fresh, locally grown corn in the cafeteria today, Monday, August 11th.

BCHS Announces New Football Coach

Jeff Griffith, a 1995 graduate of Western Kentucky University with a B.A in Exceptional Child Education/English, a Rank II in Education in 2005, and a four year letterman as an outside linebacker at WKU will assume the head football coaching duties at Barren County High School.  Griffith comes to Barren County with an impressive coaching history.

BCMS invites all softball fans to attend the 8th grade recognition scheduled for Thursday, September 25 at 5:00. The girls will take on Bowling Green in a doubleheader and 8th graders will be honored before the game.

Football Homecoming and 8th Grade Recognition

Football homecoming and 8th grade recognition for football, golf and cross country are scheduled for Thursday, September 25 at the football game against Warren East.  The 7th grade game is scheduled for 5:30 with the 8th grade game to follow.  We encourage everyone to come out and support the Trojans, enjoy the homecoming festivities and honor our 8th graders.

Every Kid Healthy Week (April 19-25)

In celebration of Every Kid Healthy™ Week (April 19-25), all Barren County Schools will host fruit tasting events during lunch with teachers, staff, students and volunteers to promote the district wellness policy called 95210 and celebrate the schools’ wellness achievements.

School Lunch: There's an APP for that!

Deadline to win a free iPad Mini has been extended to Friday, Feb. 13 at 8:00 am. 

Looking for the lunch menu?  There are several new ways to see it!

1.  A full-color, poster menu will be sent home with students on Monday, Jan 12.  This menu will be used for the entire semester, so please keep this menu until the end of the school year.

Nutrition Services - Contest Winner

On Wednesday, February 25th, 2015 Tara Miller was eating lunch at school just like any other day, but that lunch became a time to remember.    Miller took time to rate the food items at Temple Hill Elementary School, and her rating was drawn as the winner, one of over 2000 iPad Mini contest entries collected by Barren County Nutrition Services.   During the prize delivery, CheyAnne Fant, Director of Nutrition Services and 21st Century Programs, announced that the overall food ratings averaged 4 out of 5 stars.  “This is just a great example of how our meals are both appealing and nutritious,” Fant said, “We are so proud of the Nutrition Services staff members who care about how they provide meal services to our student, and these ratings show just that.”  The iPad Mini was donated to the Nutrition Services Department through a rebate program with a General Mills.

Judge-Executive Hale invited BCMS beta students to attend the fiscal court meeting for recognition of the Jr. Beta club.  Easton Frazier, Cole Wilson, Harrison Davis, Chasey Jessie, Maggie Hutton, Annabelle Botts and Jenna Brooks were selected to represent the club.  We congratulate the BCMS Jr. Beta Club for all of their accomplishments!

Student account balances can be paid at the Board of Education during regular business hours. For graduates who have a positive balance, refunds can be made at the same location.

Free Summer Feeding Sites for all children under the age of 18 are available NJE throughout summer months for breakfast and lunch.  Check out the summer feeding mobile stops for more locations.

Students Receive State Recognition for Duke TIP

The 7th grade Duke TIP (Talent Identification Program) recognized several BCMS students for demonstrating advanced aptitudes.  Duke TIP works with students to identify, recognize, challenge, engage, and help students reach their highest potential.  These students scored in the 95th percentile on grade-level assessments and took the ACT test which provided means to further define their potential for a higher level of learning. 

 

Madison High, Nathan Hood, Meghan Pierce and Madeline Williams qualified for state recognition.  They earned this award by scoring at or above the national average of recent high school graduates on the ACT.  These students will be honored in a special recognition ceremony at Western Kentucky University on May 22nd

Congratulations to Meghan Pierce.  She placed 5th in the 2015 Governor's Cup State Finals for Middle Grades in the Arts and Humanities Competition!

Monday is the next College and Career dress day as well as President's day. So dress for success by wearing a college shirt, a career related outfit, or a bowtie like many of our presidents. Just last week, our Senators created a resolution for Bow Tie Day stating the "hope that every man and woman across this Commonwealth can experience the aesthetic pleasure of wearing a well-crafted and fashionable bow tie." BC is college and career ready!
Region 2 STLP Showcase

Over 150 Barren County students grades 1-12 traveled to WKU on December 9th to compete in the Region 2 Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) conference.  Students showcase projects that impact their schools and communities or provide technical or instructional projects in hopes of qualifying for the STLP State Conference held in March of 2015.  Along with showcase competitions the region showcase also offers Engineer interviews and Digital and Social Media events.  STLP will also include winter project competitions which are live judging events for art, music & video. The winter events are submitted online from December to early January.

Malik Faulkner is named 2015 Youth of the Year

Congratulations to 8th grader Malik Faulkner.  He was recently named as the 2015 Youth of the Year.  Youth of the Year is the Boys & Girls Club of America’s premier youth recognition program for club members.

All Barren County High School sports tickets will only be available for purchase at the Barren County High School between the hours of 8 AM and 3 PM Monday-Friday. We are currently only offering the Fall Season Tickets for football, soccer, volleyball and student passes.
