Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness Undergraduate Program


GEARUP is a federal grant program through the United States Department of Education. The GU grant  was awarded to GRREC on behalf of over 1,100  students in seven Kentucky school districts.  This grant was awarded to Barren County Schools in 2007 specifically for the class of 2012.  The grant will continue to follow this class until they graduate in 2012.

Goal 1:Create a college-going culture for the Class of 2012
Goal 2: Increase success in mathematics by increasing success in Algebra
Goal 3: Support Rigor and Relevance in teaching and learning
Goal 4: Create a school/community support system for students and families

GEARUP Class of 2012 students learn how to prepare for their future educational opportunities by participating in additional activities such as :
-Career speakers in classrooms
-Admission counselors from universities, colleges, and technical schools visits 
-College tours for students and their families
- Family Nights where students and families  learn more about educational opportunities and financial aide
-Additional classroom resources are available to ensure rigor and revelence

Western Kentucky University, a community partner of GEARUP, works closly with the grant to provide information and support for students and their families.
