Bio-Medical Students will:
*move as a cohort through a series of electives during their high school careers
*have one Bio-Medical course each year including
*Principles of Bio-Medical Science (freshmen year)
*Human Body Systems (sophomore year)
*Medical Interventions (junior year)
*BioMedical Innovation (senior year)
*have opportunities to visit various medical professionals and tour state of the art facilities
*participate in a white coat ceremony for those who have proven their dedication to the program
Within the first year of the Bio-Medical Program, students will:
- Use data acquisition software and sensors to measure EKG, heart rate, and blood pressure
- Use data acquisition software and sensors to compare the response times of voluntary and reflex actions
- Create a map of regions of the brain
- Build a model of the endocrine system
- Dissect a sheep’s eye and experiment with lens
- Build muscles groups on a skeletal manikin
- Design experiments to determine the energy requirements for muscle contraction
- Use data acquisition software to evaluate muscle function
- Measure pulses to monitor blood flow
- Design a training plan for an athlete
Research suggests that students of Bio-Medical Programs:
• acquire strong teamwork and communication practices, while developing organizational, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.
• achieve significantly higher scores in reading, mathematics and science.
• earn higher GPAs as freshmen in college.
• are studying engineering and technology in greater numbers than the national average, with a higher retention rate in college engineering, science and related programs than non-PLTW students
