Thank you for your service to our school district.  If you completed an ACA electronic time sheet on the district website this past year, you are no longer required to do so.  You will be completing a paper and pencil timesheet at the locations you serve each month.  Your supervisors will be signing them and they will either forward them to payroll for processing or on to Lisa for ACA tracking purposes.  Para-professional coaches will be turning their forms into the Athletic Department.  If you have any questions, please shoot Lisa an email  at lisa.austin@barren.kyschools.us or give us a call at 651-3787.  Have a great school year!

With the end of 2015 quickly approaching, we all start thinking about the new year.  It is also time to think about a new school year.  We value your input and would like to have you share your thoughts on the proposed 2016-2017 school calendar.

Nominations for Hall of Honor

Barren County Alumni Association is looking for names of Alumnus who would meet the criteria to be a part of our Hall of Honor.   We would like to compile a list of names that we could pull from each year.  If you know of someone who meets the criteria, and would like to nominate that person, please click here.

The Barren County Alumni Association has established the Hall of Distinguished Alumni to confer on its alumni the highest recognition. This award is to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of alumni who have made a significant contribution to their field of endeavor. The Ralphe Bunch Soup kitchen in Glasgow, will be serving a free Thanksgiving meal to more than two thousand people. The community meal will be served from 11a.m. to 4p.m. Thanksgiving day. For more information on meal times or pick up, call the soup kitchen at (270)834-8537.

Basketball Season Tickets

Basketball season tickets will go on sale starting Monday November 16. From 8 until 12 each day Monday through Friday.
Season Tickets are $45 each - Student Tickets are $20 each

Grandparents will again get into the games free, if grandparents want a chair back reserved ticket, they will be half price.
Tickets will be on sale in Room 53 in the gym. Come to the front office to sign in before going to Room 53

Please join us for our Children's Day Celebration at the beautiful Plaza Theatre here in Glasgow this Friday evening, November 20th from 6-8 pm. Children from Barren County Schools, Glasgow Schools, and Caverna Elementary School will be providing a musical program for everyone's enjoyment. BC T-League Registration Information Now Available

Barren County Schools is excited to bring our youth basketball program, the “T-League,” back to Trojan Trail for a second season! The T-League is for boys and girls in grades 3-6.  Registration takes place November 7th at the BCHS Gym from 1-4 PM; November 9th at Trojan Academy Gym from 5-7 PM & November 14th at BCHS Gym from 1-4 PM.  Registeration forms are now posted on the district website at the link above & each school's website under the Barren County Little League link.  They will also be distributed to the elementary schools in the next few days.

Curtis Named Interim Director of Finance

Kiley Curtis has been named Interim Director of Finance for Barren County Schools.  Curtis has been working as Payroll Manager of the district for the past two years and comes to the position with a considerable finance background.  Mrs. Curtis graduated from Western Kentucky University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting.

Barren County ATC Students Recognized

Barren County students, Rebecca Hurley, Layke Taylor, Geran Minor, and Cody Blakley were recognized by the Mayor and the Glasgow City Council for their work with the Waste Water Management Division of Glasgow Water Company.  The students spent over a hundred hours digitally surveying 750 properties to determine water run-off levels.  This allowed students to gain valuable hands-on experience.  Glasgow Water Company donated $1000.00 for these students to use for Regional and State Competitions. 

We are very proud of these students here at the Barren County Area Technology Center!  They represent their school and community well!

Congratulations to Park City Elementary School for being one of ten schools in Kentucky recognized for outstanding teaching and learning conditions. These Winner’s Circle schools are recognized for their effective teaching and school leadership practices and will be shared as models of best practices across the state. 
BCHS Band Grand Champions in Louisville

Our Barren County High School Band were the Grand Champions at the Ballard Bruin Invitational in Louisville, KY yesterday/last night. Here's what they took 1st place in:

  • Best Overall Music
  • Best General Effect
  • Grand Champions (The highest scoring band in the competition)

As the Band entered Barren County around midnight Saturday night, they were escorted to BCHS by the Barren County Sheriff's Department!

Dr. Gary A Ransdell visits BCHS

WKU President Dr. Gary Ransdell spoke to the Barren County High School senior class about higher education opportunities at Western Kentucky University.
BCHS is blessed to have a strong partnership with WKU which includes many dual credit courses for Barren County students.  Dr. Ransdell discussed offerings at WKU, the importance of pursuing higher education and getting involved in campus life.  Thank you to Dr. Ransdell for this opportunity for our students.

Ribbon Cutting for Barren County Preschool on Broadway

Barren County School Board, along with the Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce will be having a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the new Barren County Preschool on Broadway facility.  The ribbon cutting will be held at the new facility, located on 302 South Broadway, Glasgow, KY, on Thursday, September 10, 2015, at 4:00 p.m.  Everyone is invited to attend.

BCHS Play Clocks

New Play Clocks added to the Trojan Football Field.  The Clocks were installed by students in Mr.Greg Felkins' Electricity class from the Barren County ATC and supervised by Barren County maintenance staff.  Mr. Felkins stated, 'his students enjoyed the opportunity to do the wiring for the clocks and gets hands on experience with electrical tasks that they will be responsible for in real life working conditions."

Barren Receives Grant Funds for Three Projects

The Barren County School District has been awarded a $5,500 grant from the WHAS Crusade for Children grant. Grant funds will be used to provide a desktop embosser and a Mountbatten Writer and Learning System to better serve visually impaired students.

Barren County Schools also received a $5,000.00 Farm to School grant. Funds will be used to place tower gardens in each of the district elementary schools and to support gardening and agriculture education at Barren County Middle School with the purchase of materials to support the school’s greenhouse program.   

The Barren County School District also received a Fresh Fruit and Vegetable grant from the KY Department of Education.  These grant funds will be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables for use in the cafeteria at Park City Elementary.

BCHS Announces Governor’s Scholars for GSP and GSA

Barren County High School is proud to announce eight students have been named as 2015 Governor’s Scholars. Juniors Maddie Costlow, Zach Zuccari, Gunnar Eaton, Seth Groce, Veronica Johnson and David Lancaster will be attending the Governor’s Scholars Program (GSP) this summer. Sophomore Anne Calloway Kinsman and junior Lane Myers will be attending the Governor’s School for the Arts (GSA) in June.  Letitia Hughes, Magnet Program Principal, says this is an outstanding group of students. “I am so proud of all our Barren County High School students who were selected to participate in these Governor’s Programs.   Their talent continues to amaze me. These are dedicated students who will achieve great things in their lives and have the compassion to use their talents to impact others in positive ways. They are all so deserving of this honor.”


The recent release of ACT scores for Kentucky High School Juniors indicate that Barren County students continued the trend of increasing performance on this measure of college readiness.    Click here to read the recent press release.

Little League Football & Cheerleader Signups Ending

Barren County Little League Football & Cheerleader sign-ups will be coming to a close TONIGHT, Thursday, August 13th at Jackie Browning football Field from 5:30-7:30pm.  Cost for Football player's grades 1st-6th will be $40 and Cheerleaders grades K-6th will be $40.  Financial hardship opportunities may be available upon request for any student needing assistance.  You must bring birth certificate, proof of health insurance & payment with you to sign-ups.  Also, please like us on Facebook or sign up on REMIND to keep up on important information regarding the season.  Hope to see you there!

Nutrition Services: Summer Information

Student account balances can be paid at the Board of Education during regular business hours. For graduates who have a positive balance, refunds can be made at the same location.

Free Summer Feeding Sites for all children under the age of 18 are available NJE throughout summer months for breakfast and lunch.  Check out the summer feeding mobile stops for more locations.

BCHS Baseball Wins District - Competing in Regional

Congratulations to the District Champion BCHS Baseball team!  Barren defeats Metcalfe a County 5-2 in round 1 of the Regionals.  We need our BC Family to come out on Friday as BCHS plays at 7:30 PM and cheer on the Trojans in the 2nd round of the Regional tournament at WKU Baseball Field.   Games will be broadcasted on ESPN 1230 or via web.

BCHS Principal Selection Survey

The Barren County High School SBDM members request your input as part of the principal selection process by participating in a survey. This survey can be completed on-line at by clicking here. A hard copy version will also be available in the front office at Barren County High School. If you prefer to use the online version, but do not have internet access, computers will be available in the school media center from 7:30-3:30 daily during the survey window. The window for the completion of this survey will begin on Thursday, April 23rd, and end on Thursday, April 30th, at midnight. The survey will include criteria for principal selection to be ranked in order of importance. A comment box will also be included. The council hopes the participation in this survey of students, parents, staff, and community members will provide valuable insight in the selection of our next Barren County High School principal.

Barren County Elementary Students Excel at KAAC Regional Academic Event

Students and teams from all seven elementary schools in the Barren County District competed at the 11th Region KAAC Governor’s Cup Academic Competition for the area elementary schools.  The events culminated with competitions on Saturday, March 21, 2015, at Memorial Elementary School in Hart Co.

Barren Schools Compete at State STLP Championships

This year approximately 110 students from across various Barren County Schools qualified to compete in the STLP State Championships, which were held on Thursday, March 19, 2015 in Lexington, KY. The State Championship allows students from across the state to come together and demonstrate for other students, school and community persons what they know and can do with technology.   Click Read More for full story!

Barren County Student Wins State Spelling Bee

On March 3rd, four students from the Barren County District competed at the State Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Spelling Bee in Elizabethtown.  Temple Hill students Addison and Seth, and Raygen and Zach, both from Eastern, participated in the State Spelling Bee.

District 43 Governor's Cup Results

The District 43 Governor's Cup was held at Temple Hill Elementary School on Saturday, February 28, 2015.  Ms. Lou Ann Alexander was the Contest Manager at the event.  Over all district winner was Temple Hill Elementary School.  Other Barren County Schools in the event were Austin-Tracy Elementary and Eastern Elementary.  South Green Elementary from Glasgow Schools also competed in District 43.  Click read more to see all results.

District 42 KAAC Governor's Cup Results

North Jackson Elementary School hosted the District 42 KAAC Governor’s Cup Academic competition on Saturday, February 28, 2015.  Ms. Ellen Blevins served as the Chief Official.  North Jackson Elementary was overall Runner Up in their division.  From Barren County, students from Hiseville Elementary, Red Cross Elementary and Park City Elementary participated.  Highland Elementary also competed in this District Governor’s Cup.

KMEA's Solo and Ensemble festival

On Saturday March 14th, the Barren County orchestra program was very well represented at KMEA's Solo and Ensemble festival. The festival was held at Moss Middle School in Bowling Green, KY. These students worked hard after school hours to prepare solo literature and small ensembles to perform for a judge and receive a rating of novice, apprentice, proficient, or distinguished. The judge was very complimentary of the kids' efforts and gave very specific and conducive feedback to each student as they performed. Overall, the middle school and high school combined received 3 distinguished plus ratings which are only rewarded for stellar performances. 19 distinguished ratings, 1 proficient plus, and 5 proficient ratings were received at this event. The participants are listed by rating and their grade level is in parenthesis.

Nutrition Services - Contest Winner

On Wednesday, February 25th, 2015 Tara Miller was eating lunch at school just like any other day, but that lunch became a time to remember.    Miller took time to rate the food items at Temple Hill Elementary School, and her rating was drawn as the winner, one of over 2000 iPad Mini contest entries collected by Barren County Nutrition Services.   During the prize delivery, CheyAnne Fant, Director of Nutrition Services and 21st Century Programs, announced that the overall food ratings averaged 4 out of 5 stars.  “This is just a great example of how our meals are both appealing and nutritious,” Fant said, “We are so proud of the Nutrition Services staff members who care about how they provide meal services to our student, and these ratings show just that.”  The iPad Mini was donated to the Nutrition Services Department through a rebate program with a General Mills.

Barren County Schools hosted the annual District Science Fair for grades 5-7 on Tuesday, March 10, 2015.    The District conducted an Art Showcase that allowed each school to showcase the artistic talents of many students.  Read more about the event with the attached press release.

Barren County High School Beta Club Extravaganza

Do you have TALENT?  The Beta Club Extravaganza - a talent show for all ages - is open to anyone wishing to participate.  We encourage various talents such as singing, dancing, band &/or instrumental performances, comedy acts, magicians, etc.  The Extravaganza will be held on Saturday, March 21st, 2015 at The Plaza Theatre in Glasgow, KY at 6:00 pm CST, including a silent auction.  Click on read more for entry forms and more information about the silent auction.  

Barren County Band Student Performs With KMEA All-State Percussion Ensemble

On February 28, David Lancaster, Barren County Band Junior, performed with the KMEA All-State Percussion Ensemble on the campus of the University of Kentucky.  David received this honor by placing among the top percussion auditions for the 2015 All-State Bands.  The ensemble is derived from the top 6 snare, top 3 mallet, and best timpani students.  The group was under the direction of Dr. Julie Hill, current president of the Percussive Arts Society and director of percussion studies at UT Martin.  This was David's 2nd year in the Kentucky All-State Bands and his first year in the All-State Percussion Ensemble.

Barren County Holds Active Shooter Drill for Staff

(Glasgow, KY 3-13-15).  Barren County Schools, in collaboration with The Barren County Sheriff's Department, will participate in an active shooter training exercise on Monday, March 16th.  The day of scheduled drills will involve staff only, and no students will be present.  This simulation demonstrates the school district's commitment to being proactive and responsive in the event of a real emergency.

National School Breakfast Week

Barren County Nutrition Services will be serving "Brunch for Lunch" on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 in celebration of National School Breakfast Week in connection with Read Across America Week.

The "Brunch for Lunch" theme centers around "Green Eggs and Ham" by Dr. Suess.  The items for lunch are as follows: Hot Ham and Cheese and "Green Eggs" served with herb-roasted potato bites, freshly sliced tomatoes, and juicy fresh oranges.

Eat breakfast with your school cafeteria this week, and you might be a lucky winner of prizes donated by local businesses.  

Regional Basketball

BCHS Boys will play Logan County on Wednesday night at 6 pm in round 1 of the regional tournament at WKU.  Pre sale tickets will be $6 and will go on sale for students beginning at lunch on Monday and for the general public on Tuesday morning in the front office.   Tickets will be $8 at the WKU ticket gate. 

James Bruton Named National Merit Scholarship Finalist

Congratulations to James Bruton for being named National Merit Scholarship Finalist.

The selection of some 8,000 Merit Scholarship winners from the group of more than 15,000 Finalists is now in progress. In March, NMSC will begin mailing scholarship offers to winners at their home addresses and confidential notices to their high school principals. Four major news media announcements of Merit Scholar designees will be made by NMSC in April, May and July.

Kentucky Derby Festival Regional Spelling Bee Held

The 2015 Kentucky Derby Festival Regional Spelling Bee was held at the Barren County Extension Office on Thursday, Feb. 12th.  Fifteen students who had won their local school level spelling bee competed for the regional title.  After 9 rounds of competition, Ashley Wright, an eighth grade student from Barren County Middle School was determined to be the winner.  This is not the first time Ashley has won this title.  She was also the regional champion last year and competed in the state level competition.  Angelia Pulliam, a sixth grade student from Temple Hill was declared as the 1st Runner Up for the event.  The winning word which Ashley spelled correctly was bureaucracy.

BCHS Announces New Football Coach

Jeff Griffith, a 1995 graduate of Western Kentucky University with a B.A in Exceptional Child Education/English, a Rank II in Education in 2005, and a four year letterman as an outside linebacker at WKU will assume the head football coaching duties at Barren County High School.  Griffith comes to Barren County with an impressive coaching history.  

Spirit Day February 16th

Monday is the next College and Career dress day as well as President's day. So dress for success by wearing a college shirt, a career related outfit, or a bowtie like many of our presidents. Just last week, our Senators created a resolution for Bow Tie Day stating the "hope that every man and woman across this Commonwealth can experience the aesthetic pleasure of wearing a well-crafted and fashionable bow tie." BC is college and career ready!
Newsboys in Concert at Barren County High School

The Glasgow YMCA & the Barren County Athletic Booster Club are hosting a concert by the Newsboys with special guest AudioAdrenaline, February 15, 2015 at the Barren County High School Gym.  Tickets are on sale now at www.BarrenCountyYMCA.org.  Proceeds will be split between the Barren County YMCA and Athletic Booster Club.

Barren & Hart County Awareness Night

2/6/15- Hart County High School-  Hart County is inviting everyone to join in the Awareness Night for Cancer.  HCHS will be wearing Grey in support of Alex Davidson- brain cancer and BCHS will be wearing light purple or Game on For Gunnar shirts in support of Gunnar Eaton- testicular cancer.  Everyone is invited to wear these colors or any color to support any form of cancer.  Following the boy's game there will be a time of prayer for both Alex, Gunnar, and others affected by cancer.

Barren County Board Members Take Oath of Office

Two Barren County Board of Education Board Members took their oaths of office Monday, January 5, 2015.  Charlotte Beals, current Vice-chair for the Barren County Board of Education was sworn in as board member for her fourth term and Amanda Wright, newly elected board member was sworn in to begin her first term.

Barren County Schools will be in session tomorrow.   We are not anticipating any weather related delays, but wanted to send a friendly reminder to please take precautions and bundle up in extra layers of clothes.

Barren County Students Compete at Regional Deaf & Hard-of-Hearing Spelling Bee
District Improvement Plan Drafted

The Barren County Schools Comprehensive District Improvement Plan is available for review and input.  The draft plan can be located using the links to access the Executive Summary, Needs Assessment and Goals/Activities.

Region 2 STLP Showcase

Over 150 Barren County students grades 1-12 traveled to WKU on December 9th to compete in the Region 2 Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP) conference.  Students showcase projects that impact their schools and communities or provide technical or instructional projects in hopes of qualifying for the STLP State Conference held in March of 2015.  Along with showcase competitions the region showcase also offers Engineer interviews and Digital and Social Media events.  STLP will also include winter project competitions which are live judging events for art, music & video. The winter events are submitted online from December to early January.

FCS Day: Barren County Celebrates!

Barren County Family and Consumer Science and the Kentucky Department of Education celebrated the first ever FCS Day on December 3, 2014.  Now they need your help to keep the celebration going.  Please "Dine In" with your family or friend and then take "Healthy Selfies" to post to social media to help educate and inform the public about the benefits of healthy eating and FCS education programs using the hashtags, #FCSday and #BCHealthySelfie.
